The metal vises are from Woodcraft I believe. They cost about $90 at the time (10 years ago). The rotating jaws are very useful. The leg vises on the bench are very handy and have tremendous holding power.The final step in preparing the distressed barrel was to sand it down using various grits of sand paper, from 100 down to 220. Step two was to clean/de-grease the surface thoroughly and plug the muzzle and touch hole. Then I applied cold browning solution. I use the stuff from Dixie because it works very well.Pull the card out and put in some more powder. Yup. Charge the gun but use no over-powder wad. Keeping the muzzle pointed up, cap and snap. Apply Kroil or a mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid to penetrate the rust. Use a sturdy nipple wrench and tap the end while turning to loosen the nipple. Today the hook-breech is used mainly on halfstock rifles and shotguns so the barrels can be quickly removed. When you have a fullstock rifle there will be very few times when you want to remove the barrel.Then make a cutter along the design of a couple of saw teeth that fit the groove. This can cut the groove deeper and is advanced to the next groove. Then a paper shim is placed under the cutter and the process is repeated till the grooves are deepened to your goal. The old standard for 12 gauge full choke was .040" constriction. Modern guns with modern loads really don't need that much constriction but with muzzleloaders we still are duplicating the old loadings. First off, let me say that I am brand new to flintlock hunting. I have been hunting my entire life and been around guns my entire life. I have hunted with in line muzzle loaders for many years. I bought the Pa. Pellet for the simple reason that it gave me the ability to hunt for a few more weeks in northwest Pa. without breaking the bank.The synthetic powders energy level per cubic inch is the same as black powder so use the volume measure for all of them. A .45 caliber rifle will use a .440 diameter ball patched with a patch that may be from .010 to .020 thick. Most people find that a .015-=.018 patch works best.
